Fairlawn was founded as a hamlet in 1891 and eventually had a mill, general store, a blacksmith, and other businesses. It was incorporated as Fairlawn Village in 1958. It became a city when its population reached about 6,000.

Fairlawn houses one of Summit Counties largest shopping areas located on route 18 (Market Street) West of Akron, Ohio, including Walmart, Sam’s Club, Summit Mall, Guitar Center, Starbucks, Dick’s Sporting Goods, World Market, Home Goods, and The Mustard Seed market. Each year Fairlawn boasts an amazing fireworks display where its residents and people from surrounding communities line market street to view the spectacle.
